LONE STAR MUSTANGS ARE THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!
|
With 4 lead changes, the Women's Football Alliance (WFA) National Championship lived
up to the hype. It was a true battle between the best 2 women's football teams in the
Nation. Multiple weapons, a lethal passing attack, quick running backs, and an
unbreakable defense describes both the Columbus Comets and the Lone Star Mustangs.
Both teams can score on the ground and in the air. Both teams were in the top 5 in points
scored and the top 2 in points allowed. The Mustangs averaged 283 rushing yards per
game and 180 passing yards per game. The Comets averaged 235 rushing yards per
game and 155 yards per game in the air. This had the makings of a great match-up, and
fans were not disappointed.
Early in the first quarter the Comets struck first marching down the field and scoring on
a 22 yard pass from Crystal Davis to Kimberly Kleese making it 6-0. This marked the very
first time this season that the Lone Star Mustangs trailed to any opponent in 2010. The
Mustangs came back strong with a 32 yard touchdown run by Odessa Jenkins. After
Brittany Satterwhite made the two point conversion, the Mustangs took the lead 8-6. This
was the first sign of life from the Mustang offense that started with the big game jitters, but
was able to calm down and adjust to the movement of the defense.
In the second quarter the Comets struck on the ground with a rushing touchdown by
Shelley Gates making it 12 to 8. This was the score at halftime and again the second of
the two times the Mustangs have been behind this season. Although the Mustangs were
behind at the half, the demeanor at halftime was not one of defeat, but one of confidence
that this team would rise to the occasion as they have throughout the many trials of this
season.
The third quarter belonged to both defenses, but a long drive by the Mustangs had the
Comets losing the battle of field position. Deep in their own end zone the Comets were
forced to punt and two plays later, Oddessa Jenkins earned her second rushing
touchdown with 9 minutes left in the game. The 2-point conversion was successful after
Brittany Bushman connected with Etta Maytubby giving the Mustangs a 16-12 lead.
The Mustang defense which seemed to get stronger as the game progressed came up
big stopping the Comets on the their first of two chances to win the game. The defensive
line kept pressure on the QB and caused a few forced throws by the Comets. With 1 minute
left in the game, the WFA MVP of the League, Odessa Jenkins intercepted the ball on the
41 yard line, stopping the Comets drive and securing the Lone Star Mustangs place in
women’s football history. Congratulations to the Lone Star Mustangs, WFA National
Champions!
